This was a rapid prototype in a team of 6, consisting of two artists, two producers, and two engineers. I was a game designer and producer. The theme given to us for this project was a toy truck. We brainstormed through a bunch of ideas, but all gravitated to an arena game where you have to dodge waves of monster trucks. After pitching the idea, everybody loved it and it went on to be a success at EAE Play.
I designed the flow and mechanics of the game, determining enemy spawns and behavior. I was also one of the producers for a team of six, keeping the art and engineering on-track with the Scrum process and Trello. |
DESIGN WALKTHROUGH
Player Mechanics
Because we were very limited on time and resources, I decided to make the game very simple, but fun. I wanted this to directly reflect onto the player mechanics, so the player can only move, dodge (works as a dodge-roll), and taunt. The movement was a custom player controller that was tuned to be tight and fun to play. The same was done for the dodge. Systems The taunt mechanic also ties into the scoring system. When the player taunts near broken trucks, all of the existing trucks speed up and target the player. This system encourages the player to throw themselves into the face of danger by facilitating the core mechanics. |
